Cook Islands Currency The Cook Islands uses the New Zealand currency, although a few local notes and coins are still in circulation from the time before 1995 when the islands had its own currency system. Two international banks operate in the islands - Australia and New Zealand Banking (ANZ) and the Australian owned Westpac. Both have branches in Avarua Town (open Mon-Fri 9am to 3pm, Sat 9am to 12pm). Westpac opens its branch at the airport to meet all International flights in and out of the country. On Saturday morning, Westpac opens a kiosk at Avarua market. Local cheques cannot be cashed outside of the Cook Islands. Western Union has a money transfer outlet in Avarua Town. Major credit cards are readily accepted on the main island of Rarotonga but travellers cheques can be cashed for about 3% more than either cash or credit cards and are also accepted at most large shops and resorts. On the outer islands, the Post Office acts as a banking system for cashing travellers cheques, accepting western union money transfers and foreign exchange notes, although credit cards will not be accepted.
