Cook Islands Sport

The small population of the Cook Islands means it lags being its South Pacific neighbours in competitive sports. Rugby is the dominant sport at school for boys, netball for girls. The Cook Islands national rugby team struggles against Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, but its 7's side does compete at the IRL tournament and has picked up points winning the Plate finals. The Tereora National Stadium holds competitive rugby matches on Saturday afternoons during the rugby season from Jun-Aug. Cricket is played as a social sport from Dec-Mar. The Cook Islands were represented at the South Pacific mini games in Norfolk Island in December 2001 and brought home some medals.

Tennis courts are at the Rarotongan Beach Resort, Edgewater Resort (offers professional coaching) and at Muri Beach and there's a squash court also at the Edgewater. On the north west side of Rarotonga is the Rarotongan golf club, a 9-hole flat course open to the public (golf club hire and round is just NZ$17).

Surfing amongst locals is a popular pastime on Rarotonga. The breaks are nothing like the challenging waves found on Hawaii or Fiji, but with patience and the right conditions, you will find some enjoyable surfing. The most reliable breaks is off Avana Harbour on the east side of Rarotonga. Other breaks are found in the passages at Rutaki (south coast), and off Club Raro on the north coast. All break over the reef so can be dangerous and are not for beginners. You will need to bring your own board, or buy one from Nikki's Surf Shop in Avarua as there are no rentals on the island.

A triathalon is held annually in September.
