Cook Islands Religion

The Cook Islanders are a deeply religious Christian society. The London Missionary Society brought Christianity to the islands in 1821 and the church was renamed as the Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) in 1947. Almost 65% of locals belong to the CICC, 15% are Catholics and the remaining belonging to Seventh Day Adventists, Later Day Saints, Assemblies of God and Baha'i Faith.

The CICC has several beautiful limestone churches built in the mid-1800s, notably Matavera and Avarua on Rarotonga, Arutanga on Aitutaki and Ziona on Mauke. Services are held regularly but the morning Sunday Service is the most popular when locals wear their Sunday best, woman in light white dress, men in shirt and tie, and the church is filled with glorious singing. Few activities are allowed on Sunday and although a few shops are open, internal flights are still banned. There is a limited bus service around Rarotonga to help people get to church.

Christianity extends from the church into community life and the reputation of being a crime free society results from respect of the elders and the shame of disgracing the family.
