Cook Islands Tourist Information

The 15 islands that make up the Cook Islands are spread out in a maritime area of almost 2 million sq. miles - only 93 sq. miles of this is land. The main island is Rarotonga, just 26 sq. miles in size and the centre of all things. It accounts for more than half of the 16,000 population and almost 90% of tourist activities. Beaches and tropical mountain scenery abound and life here is unrushed, albeit a little commercial. Aitutaki Lagoon, a 45-minute flight to the north has the second highest population and tourist activity, and boasts a stunning lagoon with fantastic tiny coral islands and secluded palm fringed beaches. Life here is even more laid back. The only other islands with a small tourism base are Atiu, Mauke, Mitiaro and Mangaia, the southern-most island in the group and one of the oldest in the Pacific. All of these islands are in the Southern Group and offer a more traditional lifestyle but lack nice beaches and swimming lagoons, thus its diminishing tourist appeal.
