Avarua Town is the capital of the Cook Islands on the north coast. Downtown Avarua is a pleasant laid back one street town with several excellent bars and restaurants ass well as boutique shops specializing in black pearls, pareus or sarong skirts and art. The Avarua Church was built entirely from coral in 1853 - the lagoon near here is shallow enough to wade out to the reef's edge at low tide. Punanga Nui outdoor market is held every Saturday morning from 7am and offers traditional crafts and food stalls. Ikurangi Peak can be seen from the Para O Tane Palace on the outskirts of Avarua Town. Also on the outskirts but at the other end of town is Avatiu Harbour the largest marina in the Cook Islands. Further west is parliament house on the main road behind which is the part coral part sand beach at Nikao, a popular fishing spot and then the international airport. Black Rock, the spiritual departure point for ancient Cook Islanders is now a popular picnic spot. The coastal road takes about 50 minutes to circumnavigate the island, with a public bus running every hour in each direction. Tour companies offer pick-ups from all hotels around the island. Dalo plantation line the Ara Metua inland road. Papua Waterfall in the wet season. The waterfall completely dries up in the winter, usually between July and November. The west coast is the drier side of the island and has several resorts including the Edgewater Resort, the largest hotel with just over 200 rooms. The Cook Islands Culture Village offers daily shows of traditional cook islands life and traditions. The Fruits of Rarotonga is the best snorkelling spot on Rarotonga. Koromiri Island is a popular day trip destination. None of the islands are habited and have free public access, either by kayak, swimming or wading at low tide. Snorkelling is good off Oneroa island, one of four uninhabited islands within Muri Lagoon. There is an excellent view over Motutapu and Oneroa islands from Muri Hill. The lagoon at Aroko Bungalows comes right up to the shoreline. Although there is no beach, its a short walk to Muri or kayak to the islands. Avana Passage is of several popular reef breaks around Rarotonga, although the consistency of waves is lacking. There's no rental surf boards or surf pros for lessons. The wild and windy east coast has mostly pebble beaches which are good for beachcombing but not for swimming or snorkelling. The beach at Tropical Sands is the only fine sand beach along the east coast although the lagoon here is too shallow for swimming. The Arai-Te-Tonga Marae is the most significant archaeological site on Rarotonga although visually there is little to see. Rarotonga Travel Guide click below for detailed Cook Islands Travel Guide |
