Islands Cook Islands ![]() Large Picture Deserted beaches, tropical mountains, traditional dance and black pearls ... Click an icon in the Map of Cook Islands to reveal pictures The outer Cook Islands offer a more traditional insight into the country and offer good exploring opportunities for eco tourism. Mauke Island, like its neighbours, is a flat uplifted limestone island with rocky coast, makatae inland cliffs and a central plateau where the people live and farm. The famous Divided Church is divided and decorated in half between two separate villages, each with its own entrance. The makatae cliffs surrounding Mitiaro are sharp and inaccessible All villages are inland on the raised central plateau. Mangaia is the second largest of the Cook Islands. There is virtually no lagoon and the three coastal villages all enjoy deep-sea fishing from the makatae cliffs. There are several large caves around Mangaia offering impressive stalagmites as well as human burial graves. Manuae Atoll is uninhabited but visited every so often by Aitutakans who use it for fishing and farming. With vast lagoons but tiny land masses with infertile soil, islanders in the remote Northern Atolls rely on fishing for much of their dietry needs. Rakahanga Atoll is a sleepy atoll with one main village on the southern island. Copra is still the major export. Finely woven Rito hats made from the young shoots of coconut palm leaves are a speciality of Rakahanga. Manihiki Atoll, renowned for its black pearl farming in the shallow lagoon. The cultivation of black pearls in the protected lagoon of Manihiki Atoll is the islanders main source of income. Penrhyn Atoll is the largest atoll in the Cook Islands and is renowned for its mother of pearl. Pukapuka Atoll has three villages, all with more similarities to Samoa than the Cooks. |
