The island of Atiu is an ancient uplifted coral island whose limestone cliffs and rocky coastline make for fascinating exploration. The five villages of Atiu are all close together on the central plateau above the rocky makatae that encircles the coastline. Although much of the land is extremely rocky, the central plateau offers marshy land ideal for taro plantations.

Atiu has several lovely hidden beaches on its secluded coastline. These include the splendid white sand beach at Overoa which has spectacular cliffs and beautiful shells and the fine white sand beach at Matai Landing is a safe place for launching a canoe but has no safe swimming. Another lovely setting is the pleasant Taukoroa beach where there are some spectacular sink holes for snorkelling. Oravaru beach is famous as the landing spot of Captain Cook in 1777. Cook set afoot on Atiu and trekked inland in search of supplies.

With sealed roads only around the villages in the central plateau, the bush trails around the coastline make great places for hiking and exploring by moped. The Anatakitaki Caves host the rare kopeka bird and have several fascinating legends. Caves in Atiu were also used as important burial grounds.

Humpback whales play in deep water off the coastline along the east coast. This is a good spot to watch whales without disturbing them (June-Oct).

The traditional fermentation of wine from fruits is widely practised on Atiu and there are many "Tumunu Bush Bars" to sample the brew and chat with the locals.
