Penryn is the largest and most northern of these islands, just 4 sq. miles in size, lying 9 degrees below the equator and 850 miles from Rarotonga. Four of the islands are low lying coral atolls with large sunken lagoons and the tranquil waters and warm sea temperature are perfect for black pearl farming. These islands have small fishing communities and are rarely visited. Of concern to the islanders and the Cook Islands government is the threat of global warming. These islands would be the first to disappear with even a small rise in sea level. With vast lagoons but tiny land masses with infertile soil, islanders in the remote Northern Atolls rely on fishing for much of their dietry needs. Rakahanga Atoll is a sleepy atoll with one main village on the southern island. Copra is still the major export. Finely woven Rito hats made from the young shoots of coconut palm leaves are a speciality of Rakahanga. Manihiki Atoll, renowned for its black pearl farming in the shallow lagoon. The cultivation of black pearls in the protected lagoon of Manihiki Atoll is the islanders main source of income. Penrhyn Atoll is the largest atoll in the Cook Islands and is renowned for its mother of pearl. Pukapuka Atoll has three villages, all with more similarities to Samoa than the Cooks. click below for detailed Cook Islands Travel Guide south pacific maps cook islands accommodation map ; fiji islands hotels map ; samoa islands hotels map ; tahiti islands hotels map ; tonga islands hotels map ; hawaii accommodation map ; |
