Aitutaki is the only other island with mainstream tourism and boasts a pristine lagoon surrounded by uninhabited coral atolls. The eastern Cook Islands offer a more traditional insight into the country and offer good exploring opportunities for eco tourism. Mauke Island, like its neighbours, is a flat uplifted limestone island with rocky coast, makatae inland cliffs and a central plateau where the people live and farm. The famous Divided Church is divided and decorated in half between two separate villages, each with its own entrance. The makatae cliffs surrounding Mitiaro are sharp and inaccessible All villages are inland on the raised central plateau. Mangaia is the second largest of the Cook Islands. There is virtually no lagoon and the three coastal villages all enjoy deep-sea fishing from the makatae cliffs. There are several large caves around Mangaia offering impressive stalagmites as well as human burial graves. Cook Islands Travel Guide |
